International Re-Adoption

What is International Re-Adoption?

Under some circumstances the adoptive parents are required to “readopt” children who received adoption finalization in certain foreign countries if required under the Department of Homeland Security.

In other cases adoptive parents choose to “readopt” their children in the state of California for the purpose of assisting with the child’s legal documents when it comes to entering school or participating in any activity where a birth certificate is required. Many times the child adopted from an foreign country has several adoption related documents in addition to their country of origin’s birth record and translation. When the child reaches school age or even earlier, a birth certificate or other documents can be required which can be quite cumbersome and confusing. By readopting the children in California, the child or children may be eligible to apply for a California issued birth certificate. This is especially helpful so that the adoptive parents can obtain several copies of the child’s birth certificate easily, and avoid any confusion or difficulty in providing needed documentation for educational and recreational purposes.

This option can be explored at any time after the finalization of the adoption in the foreign country and is available to California residents.
